On The Road to Emmaus

The Road to Emmaus
      by Annette Gagliardi
(This is a first draft. You may get to see another form of this as I research and revise.)

There were three roads to Emmaus.
Israel built a church on each of them,
since they didn’t know which road
the risen Jesus walked with
the unsuspecting apostles.

Luke, Cleopas and one other
(note that some say, only two were walking: Cleaopas & his wife, Mary)
traveled to Emmaus,
when joined by a certain someone
whom they all should have known.

Yet unrecognized, he spoke,
asking them about their conversation
and they replied about all that had been happening.
Jerusalem was in turmoil.
The crucified Jesus removed from his tomb.

How slow of heart!
Slow to understand
Slow to believe the scriptures.

Later, breaking bread and blessing the meal,
the disciples' eyes were opened.
They (finally) recognized their master.

There are three roads to Emmaus.
The slow-footed sloth does eventually gain understanding.
The disciple who has studied may gain wit enough to see.
Yet the true believer will find the path in a heartbeat.

The road to Emmaus is a road that must be walked
if you are going to find out the truth about God.
It is essentially a journey with Jesus Christ.

How to begin to grasp the momentous event
that is indescribable,
that has changed mankind, forever.

There are three roads to Emmaus
the opening of the Scriptures,
the opening of the eyes,
and the opening of the understanding
-three great blessings that we should all desire
which after receiving, we will never be the same.
